Design by Measurement Philosophy in Soft Rock

Although initial support design may be undertaken using calculation and/or computer modelling, GT Mining use a design by measurement approach to finalise the rock bolt pattern and to validate computer models.

GT Mining provides a complete package for the introduction, or upgrading of roof bolting support and can also introduce complete roof control management systems aimed at improving safety and productivity.

The use of in situ monitoring to confirm support design and maintain safe working conditions is now established for rock bolting in difficult conditions and can be considered “world best practice”. This approach is considered by GT Mining to be a safe method of design and has been successfully applied in UK coal and soft rock mines, as well as in Europe, South Africa and India.

Support Consumable Selection and Testing

GT Mining has extensive experience in undertaking testing and assessment of support systems and can provide independent advice on rock bolt systems and selection. The general philosophy applied successfully by GT Mining to rock bolting in mines around the world is to apply stiff bolting systems to resist the effects of roof shear caused by horizontal stress and, through good load transfer characteristics, mobilise the effectiveness of the reinforcement elements. Resin bonded reinforcement systems, which are universally employed, rely on the efficiency of the load transfer from rock to tendon. The load transfer is the mechanism by which force is generated and sustained in the reinforcement tendon as a consequence of strata deformation.

 

In fully grouted rock bolt systems the load transfer mechanism is dependent on the shear stress sustained on the bolt resin and resin rock interfaces. In order to ensure the suitability of rock bolt consumables all aspects of the reinforcement system are specified and performance tests are carried out underground to confirm system performance in the prevailing strata. Other aspects of the design which are assessed include the profile of the rock bolt, the resin annulus, the effects of various borehole wall profiles generated with different drill bit types and the bolt installation method. Underground short encapsulation pull tests are carried out in the range of rock types present within the reinforced height to confirm system performance. Routine short encapsulation pull  testing and roof core logging and testing are then used to confirm continued effectiveness in variable geological conditions.
